Medical Health Insurance for Children and Students

November 16th, 2007

To fight a growing problem of   kids living in the USA without any health insurance about 10 years ago Congress suggested a plan named Title XXI (or the State Children’s Health Insurance Program [SCHIP]).  According to this state plan  the families whose earned income is  not enough  for private medical health insurance  but  too high to have right  for Medicaid  can get  medical care for their  kids just by paying  5%  maximum of their  annual income, or , in most cases, completely free.

Title XXI sets minimum standards which should be 100% met by each state. They are   the following: provision of a good physical examination of babies and children, programs of immunization and different kinds of emergency services. But all the states are also provided with considerable freedom under the State Children’s Health Insurance Program and the programs running in each state vary.

What should be noted here is  that this plan is  made up to provide protection for  the kids who  have  no  medical insurance  protection and that  kids who are already  protected by a health insurance policy  are not eligible for any  cover under the  implementation of this plan.

In case when children   turn to be eligible for protection under this state plan but are not eligible for Medicare you can regard taking care about them either under a private family plan or on some individual plan.  This way, it will usually, but not in all cases, be to provide protection under a family plan. If you want to provide with medical care only one kid, the best option here is an individual plan.

In case of students – most educational institutions have their own health care polyclinics for the treatment of routine illnesses such like colds and minor sport injuries.  However, you should have some sort of medical health insurance in case of unexpected medical problems including surgery.

When it possible, you should look to protect   kids by your own personal or family plan insurance and most plans will protect   kids even when they are at school. But there may also be some limitations   put under these circumstances that are why you should read carefully through the insurance plan details.

If you think your kids need personal medical health insurance to be protected at college, then you should consider several insurance companies that   work especially for the students’ needs. This is where you should conduct a careful research to be sure your children are getting the protection needed.

Whatever you choose, you should not think that the government will bear responsibility for the care about your kids and that the educational institutions they study in will do the same for you when they become students. You, being their parents is/are the one /ones who is really responsible.
