Graduate Student Health Insurance - Individual or University Policies?

November 16th, 2007

You have obviously just finished your studies in some college or university with a Specialist or at least Bachelor degree in a field you love.  Then our congratulations! Maybe you made up your mind to go to work, or maybe you have decided to go to college full time, but anyway, you are lead to graduate school with your specific goals in mind.

Nevertheless, many graduate students find themselves a little bit in difficult situation when they need to settle the things with their health insurance. If you are going to graduate school, you are evidently too old to be still protected by your parents’ health insurance plan. The next most convenient way of getting health care protecting is through an employer, but, of course, this variant is impossible if you are attending   graduate school on regular basis and not work, or if you are working part time  and attending graduate school at the same time.

If you cannot get health care protection with the help of your parents or via “an employer option”, there are two variants for you to consider. You can get health care protection by obtaining of an individual health insurance policy or, one more option – to purchase a graduate student health insurance policy from the university you go to.

If you choose not to obtain any individual insurance policy, you can get health care protection through the school you have graduated from. Many graduate schools suggest health care protection, and  some of those graduate schools make the health care insurance compulsory, that is  you must  purchase graduate student health insurance policy  via the school  unless you already have a reliable health insurance policy  with another provider.
So, as you start getting ready for the next step of your education, check your graduate school if it offers to its graduate students any health insurance. If not, think about obtaining of a personal health insurance policy. You have several choices to choose, you may even find that you even do not even need any insurance policy.
